This cybersecurity company develops software that helps government organizations, including those in the U.S. and Asia, address complex security threats and strengthen technical readiness.
The client has a mature functional programming codebase with limited documentation, infrastructure gaps, and numerous external integrations that were harder to change due to context barriers.
This system couldn’t simply be “put on pause” while a replacement took shape. The older system still requires continuous security updates and incident response to serve its clients. So both platforms needed engineers who understood the code and its surrounding context.
Stack Builders brought the Haskell experience needed to work confidently inside a large, mature platform spanning both application and infrastructure concerns. Our engineers took ownership of changes from planning through validation, while tools like Codex helped them navigate the codebase, explore implementation options, and verify work more efficiently.
A closer look at how we worked together on this project, including the engineering decisions, delivery practices, and collaboration model that helped us accomplish the goal.
Our engineers work across product, DevOps, performance, and discovery, bringing application and infrastructure context into the same conversation.
Functional programming, secure development practices, testing, instrumentation, and disciplined review help the team make careful changes in a complex platform.
Codex helps with planning, codebase navigation, code generation, and verification, while engineers stay responsible for the technical decisions behind each change.
We account for hosted, customer-managed, and isolated environments from the start, including differences in access, virtualization, identity, and performance.
Two Stack Builders teams work across both sides of the transition: one keeps the current cyber-training platform secure and stable, while the other contributes to its replacement. That lets our client keep serving users today while moving the modernized product forward.
The training experience depends on virtual environments working when users need them. Our engineers support and evolve the services and infrastructure behind those environments, including the systems used to provision and manage cybersecurity exercises. As the broader platform changes, this helps keep the virtual ranges dependable rather than letting infrastructure become a bottleneck.
Access control gets harder when a platform spans different users, workflows, and environments. We maintain and expand authorization across core platform workflows so people can reach the resources they need without weakening the controls around them. This is especially important as the platform continues to change and access patterns become more complex.
Our team addressed CVEs, upgraded dependencies, resolved production issues, and supported broader hardening work across application and infrastructure layers. The goal was to reduce risk while preserving the reliability of a mature platform still supporting day-to-day operations.
The current product still needs to improve while the replacement is being developed. Our engineers work on the systems behind training content, assessments, structured exercises, and related workflows, while continuing to support new features on the existing platform. That allows the client to keep improving the user experience instead of freezing the product during the transition.
The existing platform still has incidents, integrations, and technical issues that cannot wait for the new product to be fully developed. Our engineers respond to production problems, maintain integrations, and work across the mature codebase and surrounding infrastructure. That ongoing support gives the client room to move the replacement forward without neglecting the system its users still depend on.
Since 2021, Stack Builders has helped the client keep a complex cybersecurity platform running and evolving across product, infrastructure, performance, training, and simulation work. The partnership combines long-term platform knowledge with the engineering capacity to handle both everyday changes and deeper technical problems.
