We've released one of our first open-source Ruby gems: it's called valid_data, and you can use it to scan your ActiveRecord models for invalid rows. We use the gem at Stack Builders from time-to-time in order to "check in" with our datastore and make sure we don't have validation-related problems in our applications.

Type systems are so prevalent in modern programming languages that we probably take them for granted. But what exactly is a "type", and what are its origins in the history of computational logic? In this post, we'll take you on a 10-minute tour from Leibniz's effective computability dilemma, through Russell's theory of types and Church's lambda calculus, all the way to Haskell, Stack Builders' favorite strongly-type and functional programming language.

Stack Builders is proud to announce our most recent addition to the development team. Eric Jones is an accomplished Rubyist and Haskeller, and we couldn't be more excited to have him as part of our growing team which spans New York and South America!

SB is proud to present Quito's first-ever functional programming hackathon. The language-du-jour will be the advanced, purely-functional Haskell programming language. We will have 2 groups - a coding dojo for beginners, and an open-source collaboration for experienced Haskell coders - so bring your laptop & some friends and be prepared to have your mind expanded!

Contributing to open-source software is an important part of working at Stack Builders. Recently, 2 junior developers at SB made contributions to a very well-maintained discussion platform called Discourse. Here's their story, and what our company learned along the way.
